Common Questions & Expert Answers

Q: “I’ve been using this skincare for two weeks, and I’m not seeing any results.”

Lisa: This is one of the most common concerns I hear from clients. It’s important to understand that visible improvements in your skin’s appearance usually require consistent use for at least 60 to 90 days.

When starting a new skincare regimen, consistency is key. Applying your products both morning and night is essential to support the appearance of healthy-looking skin. Skipping applications or using products inconsistently can impact the visual results.

I also suggest adding exfoliation to your routine around three times a week, especially in the evening.

Exfoliation helps remove the buildup of dead skin cells, which can occur naturally over time. This not only helps your skin look more refreshed but can also improve how your skincare products sit on the surface and support their effectiveness.

Q: “I feel dry after using the serum. What can I do?”

Katie: This is a common misconception I often discuss. While our Age-Defying Lift & Tight Serum contains ingredients known to enhance the appearance of hydrated skin, it’s essential to follow your serum with HYDRATE & RENEW Enriched Moisturizer.

Think of serums as concentrated formulas designed to support the look of your skin by delivering active ingredients. A moisturizer helps lock in that hydration and creates a protective layer on the surface. Skipping this step may leave your skin feeling dry after applying a serum

Skincare results also depend on overall diet, hydration, and other factors. Learn more in Dr. Cates’ books, where she explains this in more depth.

Q: “When should I apply my SPF in my skincare routine?”

Katie: I’m always surprised how often I see SPF applied before moisturizer! SPF should always be the last step of your morning skincare routine, right before makeup.

I like to explain it like this: SPF acts as a protective shield for your skin. You want all your nourishing skincare products to go underneath that shield, with sunscreen sitting on top. Remember the white-nosed sunscreen look of the 80s? Modern sunscreens are designed to avoid that, but they still offer that same protective barrier.

Applying moisturizer after sunscreen can prevent your skincare products from fully absorbing and make the SPF less effective.

Q: “I have sensitive skin. Will clean beauty products still cause irritation?”

Lisa: This is a concern I hear quite often. Many people with sensitive skin have experienced discomfort with conventional skincare, and it’s understandable to feel cautious. Clean beauty products—like The Spa Dr. line—are nontoxic skincare and formulated without common irritants such as synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, and certain chemicals known to trigger reactions for some individuals.

However, everyone’s skin is unique. I always suggest starting with a patch test on your inner arm for 24 hours before using a new product on your face. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult with one of our Clean Beauty Advisors for alternative recommendations.

Q: “Do I really need all these products? Can’t I just use one or two?”

Katie: I completely understand the desire for a simple skincare routine! While a basic cleanser and moisturizer are a great start, your skin may benefit from a variety of products that each play a specific role in enhancing its appearance.

A cleanser helps remove surface impurities, but it won’t assist in the turnover of dead skin cells like an exfoliant does. A serum is designed to deliver targeted ingredients to support specific skin concerns, while a moisturizer locks in hydration and helps maintain a healthy-looking skin barrier.

That said, we can always help you prioritize and simplify your routine to fit your lifestyle and skincare goals.

I personally love the 3-Step Age-Defying Skincare System because it is so simple to use and takes just 5 minutes daily.

Q: “I’ve been using conventional products for years. Why should I switch to clean beauty now?”

Lisa: This is such a thoughtful question. Conventional skincare products often contain ingredients that create short-term cosmetic effects but might not align with long-term skin health.

Clean beauty focuses on supporting your skin’s natural look and helping you maintain a healthier-looking complexion. The Spa Dr.’s approach avoids ingredients known to potentially disrupt the skin’s balance or cause irritation over time.

In addition, clean beauty products are formulated without ingredients commonly considered harsh or sensitizing, making them a thoughtful choice for women navigating life stages like pregnancy or menopause.

Many of our clients notice that their skin appears more balanced and resilient after transitioning to clean beauty, often needing fewer products as their skin’s appearance improves.

Q: “I’ve heard clean beauty products don’t work as well as conventional ones. Is that true?”

Katie: I hear this misconception a lot, and I’m always happy to clear it up. Clean beauty has advanced tremendously in recent years.

The main difference is that clean beauty products are designed to support the skin’s natural balance, often leading to more sustainable, visible improvements rather than temporary effects.

In addition, in a clinical study with 33 participants over 56 days:

  • 97% showed visible improvement in skin firmness after 28 days*
  • 100% showed improvements in the appearance of skin elasticity after 28 days*
  • 100% showed improvement in the appearance of wrinkles after 56 days*
