Spring is a beautiful time of year when all things are blooming with life. The sun is out for more hours, it’s warmer outside, and the possibility of transformation is abundant. This is an ideal time to adjust your skin care routine too. Even small adjustments can have a big impact on your skin when the seasons change. Here are five changes you can make to help your skin adjust to these seasonal transitions.
Wear Less Makeup
Wearing too much makeup can lead to clogged pores and unnecessary breakouts. Springtime is the perfect time to wear less makeup – or go makeup-free if you’re comfortable showing off your skin. If you feel more confident with a little coverage, choose lightweight mineral makeup, preferably made with organic ingredients.
And remember, we all have days when we want to disguise our skin. This is especially true in a world of social media filters and airbrushing. However, most people don’t have flawless skin and that’s okay. In fact, you’re probably the only person who notices what you perceive as flaws.
Protect Your Skin
Sunscreen is important year-round. However, if you’re spending more time outside, that means more sun exposure and more oxidative sun damage to your skin. Applying natural mineral sunscreen that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals can help protect your skin. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 that is made with zinc oxide to protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays.
UV rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the day, so it’s especially important to take precautions during these hours. You can wear sun-protective clothing that blocks or absorbs UV rays in addition to wearing sunscreen. Wearing a hat and sunglasses will also help protect your face.
And don’t forget that even if you are in the shade or think you are safe from damaging UV rays, that might not be true. Certain situations require a little more extra care to protect yourself from the sun, including:
- High-altitudes: Your skin may burn faster because there is less atmosphere to block the sunlight.
- Tanning beds: According to the non-profit organization Impact Melanoma, “tanning beds emit 3-6 times the amount of radiation given off by the sun.” And spending 20 minutes in one is “equivalent to spending one to three hours a day at the beach with no sun protection at all.”
- Overcast sky: Contrary to popular belief, clouds do not protect your skin from sunburns.
- Reflective surfaces: You can get a sunburn from sunlight bouncing off of water, metal, concrete, sand, and other surfaces.
The bottom line? When in doubt, wear sunscreen.
Streamline Your Skin Care Routine
It’s a common misconception that using more products will create better results. Using a simple system like the Daily Essentials 4-Step Skin Care System nourishes your skin, is easier to travel with and takes up less space. Plus, it’s pH-balanced to protect the skin’s microbiome, is gentle yet effective, and rich in antioxidants.
Clean Out Your Beauty Products
One of the primary locations for clutter in any home is in the beauty cabinet. Have you ever said, “I want to try this product” – only to let it collect dust and forget about it? Many of us fall into the trap of trying to find a “cure-all” skin care solution. In reality, clean skin starts from within with nutrition, hydration, and a healthy lifestyle.
When you are cleaning out the beauty clutter you no longer use, use this simple list to make decisions quickly. Here’s how to check your products:
- Check the expiration date. At Cosmetic Calculator, you can plug in the brand and batch number to find out when your product was made and if it has expired.
- Smell it! Does your product smell rancid or off? If so, that’s a sure sign to stop using it.
- Look for physical changes. Does your product look different than it did when you purchased it? If it’s a liquid, has it separated or changed texture? Toss it.
- Examine the packaging. If the bottle or container has expanded or is warped, it’s time to say goodbye.
- Recall when you last used the item. If you don’t like or use the product, don’t keep it.
Use Natural Skin Care Products
Spring is a great time of year to turn over a new leaf and use products that do not contain any toxic ingredients. I know that for some people, this might be a tough change. You might find yourself giving up some of your favorite products. Avoid products that contain parabens, formaldehyde releasers, or oxybenzone. You can find other ingredients to avoid in my book, Clean Skin From Within – or you can download this Skin Care Ingredients Shopping Guide.
Spring is a beautiful season meant to be enjoyed. It’s a time to get fresh air, feel lighter and brighter, and embrace the feeling of renewal. Adjusting your skin care to this new season will help you achieve youthful, supple, glowing, and healthy skin now and for the rest of the year.
