Transcript of Busting Skin Care Myths
Hi there. Welcome to The Spa Dr. Podcast. I’m Dr Trevor Cates. Today I want to bust some skincare myths and some of the information out there that’s just simply not true when it comes to skin care. When I developed The Spa Dr. skin care line years back, I learned a lot about skin care products and manufacturing of them. What goes into it, the research around it, I’ve been in naturopathic physician for almost 20 years now and it was about six years ago that I started to really look into skin care products and because that was what my patients were asking me about. They knew I was working in a world renowned spa. They were visiting me there and they said, well, Dr Cates, I’ve been going into the spa and I’ve been looking for a natural skincare products, but my concerns are they’re just not working for me.
And so that’s when I really started to dig into the research and look at skin care and what works, what doesn’t work, what makes natural skin care products, what makes impossible to work. So it is possible to have natural and effective skincare products. But the problem is there is a lot of misinformation out there. Unfortunately there are a lot of marketing hypes and marketing claims that just aren’t backed by science that aren’t based on science and research. And that’s partly due to the fact that there is limited regulation on the purity of skin care products, the testing on skin care products as well as the claims that can be made about personal care products, skin care products. And, although there is some research we need more, we need more on skin care products. And I think what happens is when we don’t have a lot of research, but we have limited research, a lot of times people will try and fill in the gaps and try and make up stuff.
So I see a lot of misinformation circulating out there and I see one article come out about a myth and that’s not true or misinformation. And then as somebody else will share it. And then it seems like it’s almost like it becomes true. So I wanted to spend some time today really getting back to the facts, getting back to the information and the science behind skincare products and some of it has to do with, with um, what makes sense and really understanding how it all works. And as a physician, I really like to look at the research and understand the science behind how things work. So I want to share some of that information with you today.
I don’t have a guest, it’s just me and as you know, I’m the host of The Spa Dr. Podcast. I also have the book clean skin from within as well as I am the founder and owner of The Spa Dr. skin care line. So again, some of the other things that we want to talk through today are some of the claims that are made. And I want you to be aware that when you look at packaging, when you look at containers, I want you to know what to look for. So be aware that that there is not a lot of regulation around much of skin care and that includes some of the claims. And so those become marketing opportunities for skin care companies and there’s a lot of money to be made when things are marketed well and skin care companies can sell things better. So sometimes they’ll put on the label, they’ll put natural or hypoallergenic, well these words, these two in particular don’t actually have any regulation behind them. So somebody can maybe put a few in natural ingredients in or maybe, you know, add an herb or something and then call it a natural skin care product. So just I want you to, to be educated and really looking at the labels, looking at the ingredients. I’m going to share some specific tips today on what to look for. Also when something says it’s hypoallergenic, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not going to have an allergic reaction to it or that it’s safe to use on sensitive skin or that safe in general because there’s really nothing to back that other than the company has decided that that’s how they want to market their product. And that’s one of the things that they want to state. And they don’t have to go through testing in order to make that claim. And so you know, a lot of it is marketing.
So there’s also what I’ve noticed with skin care companies, a lack of transparency about ingredients. And also sometimes ingredients are hidden and they’re not listed on the label or they’re, um, they’re in such small print, they’re hard to read. And so I know, I know as a skin care manufacturer, some of the challenges that can come along with this and it’s kind of hard to fit all the ingredients on the containers or the boxes that they come on. We certainly put all at the spa doctor, we put on all of our ingredients. We have nothing to hide. We list all of them on the label and we also include them on the website. And so I do think that if you have difficulty reading the packaging, the labels, you should be able to go to the website of the skincare product and actually pull up all of the ingredients, not just the active ingredients or the highlighted ingredients, but every single ingredient, the ingredients label should list everything that’s in the product. And even still with that, it is important to be aware that things can be hidden under a single ingredient. For example, with fragrance, there are many, many ingredients within just fragrance. And all of those ingredients don’t have to be listed. And of course it would be hard to list all the ingredients that on a package to list all those ingredients that are under the word fragrance. And sometimes that’s proprietary information too, that manufacturers don’t want to share. So that’s one of the reasons why fragrance is listed only without putting a lot of detail.
Within the word fragrance, there actually can be hormone disrupting chemicals within fragrance. And so you, things like for example, diethyl phthalate is a plasticizing agent, but it’s used in fragrance to help the smell last longer. And this is a known hormone disrupting chemical. It’s been found in human samples. So we know that when people get exposed to it and also can get into circulation and get, um, get into, um, into the body. So it is important to realize it that the ingredients may be listed, but you may not always know that they’re harmful cause fragrance. A lot of times people think that that, for example, is a safe ingredient, but there are actually many toxic ingredients. And I talk about toxins in skin care products and other blog posts and podcast interviews. I’m not going to spend as much time today talking about that, but I would, uh, I would hate to miss out on the opportunity to help educate you on the importance of understanding ingredients that can be harmful for your skin and for your health. So make sure that you’re looking for companies and you’re looking for skin care products, that, that everything is listed and all the ingredients are listed and that you know what these ingredients are, you know that they’re safe. In my book clean skin from within, I share 20 different ingredients to avoid. And that’s a great place to start. So if you have my book already, you can, you can refer to that. And I also talk about natural alternatives to look for it and I also explain why you want to avoid those specific 20 ingredients and some of the research, some of the studies behind those and why they’re of concern. Now again, we need more research on, on toxins and skincare products as well as natural ingredients and ingredients in skin care products that provide results. But we do want to rely upon what we do have and then we can hopefully get more research down the line to give us even more information.
So I also want to say there are a lot of manufacturers out there now that want to sell natural skincare products. And I know you watch The Spa Dr. Podcast because you’re interested in your health, wellness, your natural beauty and natural skin care. So you’re already interested in and a more natural approach. So I want you to be particularly aware that there are many, many manufacturers of skincare now that are, that are making natural skincare products. And that’s a great thing because now you have more options than ever. But that also means that because they realize there’s a lot of money to be made in this industry, that they want to figure out how they can get into this market. And the larger brands are actually buying up a lot of smaller brands. You may not even know that some of these smaller brands are acquired by very large companies. The problem is the larger companies, a lot of times they’re more interested in cutting costs, which can also impact the quality of ingredients, not always the case. There are some larger companies that still can maintain their integrity, the quality of the products. But oftentimes as happens, we see it over and over again. And you probably have your own experience with this, where you had a skincare product, maybe a natural skin care product that you absolutely loved. And then all of a sudden it seemed to change. And you may have found out that the company was actually bought by another company, a larger company. And so that oftentimes means that you have a new manufacturer, you have new supply chain, and that can actually change the quality of the product as well as how clean and how truly natural the products are. So I just want you to be aware of this because I know that many of you shop at The Spa Dr. and get The Spa Dr. skin care products. But I also know that we don’t offer everything, that you may be looking elsewhere for makeups and sunscreens and other things that we don’t yet make it the spot doctor. And I’ve learned so much about this and I get asked about these things all the time. So that’s why I wanted to do this podcast today.
So all of this really leads to a lot of misinformation and myths. And so here are some of the myths that I hear. One is natural is natural. So you know, if it says it’s natural, then it must be natural. Well, again, that has a lot to do with marketing claims and because a lot of companies are starting to want to either acquire smaller natural skin care brands or they’re starting to make their own natural skincare lines, natural isn’t always natural. So I definitely want to bust that myth. Natural is not always natural. That’s not always good for you.
And so that leads me to the second myth that I hear. If it’s natural, it must be good. While that’s not necessarily true, you’re not, just because it’s natural, even if it’s really clean, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily going to give you results. And so I want to talk to you today about what to look for and natural skin care products to make sure you’re finding ones that give you results. Because if it’s natural, that’s a great first step. But there are also things that you want to make sure that your skin care products have to make sure that they’re also efficacious.
There’s another, another myth that I hear is if it contains one natural ingredient that’s highlighted, that’s really the most important thing. So what will happen a lot of times the marketing as it’ll say, like contains argon oil or it contains co Q 10. And so people will see the label and they’ll think, or they’ll hear the marketing and the advertisement about it and they’ll think, oh, that must mean it’s natural. That must mean it’s good. Make sure you don’t fall for this. This trap makes sure you look at the label, look at the ingredients and read it. What else is in there? Because I’ve seen so many companies start making a product and they add one natural ingredient or maybe a few natural ingredients, but then it’s loaded with other harmful ingredients like synthetic fragrance. So you’ll see me may see fragrance in there. You might see parabens in there. You’ll see paraben at the end of the word, like methyl paraben or propyl parabnn or you might see other ingredients that are some of the formaldehyde releasers and other ingredients that I talk about and my book. And so make sure you’re looking at those ingredients. What else is in there other than that natural ingredient that they market about. And you know, a lot of manufacturers will tell a story and, and how there’s this special ingredient from the Amazon forest or something like that. And that’s fantastic. There’s some fantastic natural ingredients, but what else is in there and how is it formulated? What, what else is going on with the product?
Okay. Another myth, moving onto another myth. Skin care products just stay on the skin so you don’t have to worry so much about skin care products cause they just stay on the skin. And, or I’ve also heard really, you know, maybe a little bit gets absorbed, but you really don’t have to worry about toxic ingredients because it’s just such a tiny, tiny amount. Okay. Well, it’s true that the amount of product, amount of toxic ingredients, things like fragrance and diethyl phthalate in a skin care product and one application is a small amount. But if it’s a product that you’re using every day and you’re using it on a regular basis and you’re using it on your face, maybe you’re using it on your lips and you see you’re licking your lips or you’re using it after a treatment where your skin is more, has more absorbability, where you’ve had just a facial or maybe you’ve had some microneedling and your skin is going to be more likely to absorb some of these nutrients.
Skin care products do not to stay on your skin. They can get absorbed. They don’t absorb the same way as if you eat something, but your skin is your largest organ. Remember, it’s your largest organ. It’s very permeable to what you put on it. Now that varies from person to person. And so like if you just had a procedure or something like that, that also makes a difference. And the product itself, the size of the molecule determines how much it’s absorbed as well. And so I have heard people out there on the flip side of this, say you know 90% of products that you put on your skin and get absorbed or 30% or whatever, there’s actually no magic number across the board of all products you put on your skin for every person that gets absorbed into the body. So it really varies. It’s a huge range depending on person product and a number of other things.
But we do know that ingredients that you put on your skin can get absorbed and including some of these very toxic ingredients like parabens. For example, there have been studies that have found that have detected parabens in breast tumor tissues and other tissues in the body and human samples. I mentioned that about diethyl phthalate and phthalates in general, and so these things actually can get absorbed in this. One of the biggest ways that we’re exposed to these ingredients is through personal care products. So we do know that when we get exposed to these, they can get absorbed.
And then don’t forget about the fact that if it’s, if it’s a personal care product that you’re spraying, that you could be breathing that in as well. And that’s another route of exposure to be very conscious of. Or if you’re putting on makeups and it’s a powder, you could actually breathe in that powder. If you’re applying sunscreens and this including, you know, spraying it around your children, your family or on the beach and you’re spraying sunscreen. Don’t forget about the fact that you could be breathing that in and it could be damaging your lungs and the Alveoli and, and creating issues there. Particles getting trapped inside. So be, be very mindful of what, what you’re putting on your skin and in and around your body and try and choose clean and nontoxic ingredients and organic as much as possible.
I know I mentioned that if it says it’s natural, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to work. Well, there’s the flip side of that. I’ve also heard people say that if you’re choosing natural skin care, then that means you have to give up results and you have to give up that luxurious experience that skin care products can provide. And this also is a myth. This is not true, but it really depends on how the products are made. What are the ingredients in there? And so I’m going to talk about that, talk about that next, the last myth that I want to mention today. I might end up throwing in a few more, but one of the big ones that I want to mention today is you that you have to change your skin care products after a while because they stop working. I hear a lot of people saying say that, I hear my girlfriends say that, um, that aren’t using my skin care products. By the way, the ones that aren’t, I’ve heard a lot of people say that and that’s actually not true.
What we have found at The Spa Dr. Is that the customers we’ve had, and we’ve been around for over just over three years now, um, actually what can be coming up on four years in November we will be celebrating our anniversary. So what are the things that our customers tell us is the longer that they’ve used the products, the more they’ve continued to work. The people that have been with us since the very beginning, including myself and some of the people on my team are continuing to see the improvements in their skin. You may have heard our aesthetician, Annie, talk about this and what she notices for herself and for her clients as well, that the longer they use the products, the better they work. So that is a myth that I know is not true from personal experience. However, before I created my skincare line, I wouldn’t have known a lot of this. So that’s what I wanted to again, share all this information with you today because I have learned so much over the last few years and and creating this company, creating the products and getting ready to launch new products coming up soon. And so stay tuned on those new products that we have coming soon cause I’m continuing to look at the research on these.
So let’s get into the truth. Let’s talk about what do we really know about skin care products, what are the things that, that we know from the science, from the research and so I want to share some of that with you today. The first thing is you really want to find truly clean and organic ingredients for your skin care products. Clean, natural and organic ingredients. Now when we say natural, what I mean by that is it comes from nature and if something says it’s as skincare product says it’s all natural, that’s actually not true. And that actually is a claim that people can get in trouble for using. Because all natural implies it comes from twigs and barks and you know, like leaves. And that it’s never been processed so natural really. And when we talk about natural skin care and natural products, that means it comes from natural sources, it comes from plants. And we want to get as close to that plant with as minimal processing as possible to get that, make sure that we’re getting those benefits that we know are available to us in nature. The healing powers in nature are great. I know of that. That as a naturopathic physician, I have been, you know, like I said, I’ve been doing this for and each by like physician for 20, almost 20 years now. And I really am amazed with the healing powers of nature when we, we want answers for our health and that includes for our skin. It’s great to look to nature and we add in modern science into that, we have a magical combination. If we have truly natural ingredients and we use modern science to help us extract those ingredients and to make the most effective forms of these natural ingredients. That’s a magical combination.
So again, you want truly clean and organic ingredients. And there are certifications for organic. So you can um, believe in some of that marketing that companies will provide at the spa doctor, we tell you exactly what we can tell you what exactly what percentage of every single one of our products is organic. And we do try and source as many ingredients as possible as organic. Sometimes there are ingredients that we use that are not available that as organic. So we can’t use those. And so I can say, in support of other companies that might say, yeah, our products are not 100%. Not all of them are 100% organic. And that is because a lot of times it’s hard to find certified organic ingredients. For every single ingredient you put in a skin care product. But getting as close to 100% as possible is where you want to get. So 80% or more is what you should strive for as far as organic ingredients and avoiding those toxic ingredients. I mentioned a few today, but again, you can find a whole list of them in my book, clean skin from within. There are also other tools or resources online like environmental working group, ewg.org and The Spa Dr. skin care products are EWG verified. If you’re familiar with that verification process or that certification, they have a strict process that they put all those skin care products through that they will verify that they actually are clean and free of, um, some of the biggest toxic ingredients out there.
So that’s one of the things too is that we know about the truth about, um, about skincare products. You really do want to find clean, organic, truly natural products because you want to avoid those things like the hormone disrupting chemicals, possible carcinogenic ingredients and nature provides so much healing opportunity. So the second thing that I wanted to, to share is about the quality and quantity of these natural ingredients. This is really key. This ties into the difference between what makes something just clean and natural versus something that’s clean and natural. And effective is part of that is the quality and quantity of ingredients. So for those of you who cook, you may know that when you cook or bake, when you use really high quality ingredients, that the end result of what you make is going to taste better. And for those of you that are health nuts, you know, it’s also going to be, when you get those really high quality ingredients, they’re good. They’re gonna provide more health benefits as well.
So that’s what we want for skin care products too. Or it’s the same thing with supplements. You want the highest quality and quantity and the right amounts of those supplements too, and the right forms. And that’s what we want for skin care products too. And that’s one of the reasons why I ended up making my skin care products was because I, I was able to find some that were clean and natural, but a lot of times they felt like the quality of the natural ingredients, the natural actives were not in there and their highest farm and their most vibrant quality and also the quantity. Because oftentimes those natural, those really great ingredients that are so powerful are diluted by a bunch of other ingredients. And it’s really hard to know just by looking at an ingredient label, how, how much of that quantity you’re going to have in something like Argon oil or vitamin E or a co Q 10 or green tea and some of these active ingredients that there’s such great, great research on, on helping the quality of the skin. Um, is that it? You know, oftentimes you’ll see it on the label, you’ll see it in the ingredient labels, but you don’t know how much of it is in there and there’s really no way to to just know by looking at the label, except that if it has the ingredient list is really, really long. Then oftentimes if you have that many ingredients that are product, that means that all of those ingredients have to be a small amount to fit all of that into one product. So if you’re looking for a high potency or a high amount of a certain ingredient, then you probably want to avoid the ones that have the huge long list of ingredients or they can’t even put all the ingredients on the label and they give you a little insert that, you know, they have to open up to look at all the ingredients.
So that’s one thing and I know that there are at The Spa Dr., We have so many great ingredients that we wanted to include. So we, we try and create a balance with that, of, of having enough of those ingredients without doing too many ingredients that, so, because we don’t want to dilute all of the really high quality ones. And when we talk about quality too, we think about where do those natural actives, where do those natural ingredients come from? We source from like I said, as organic as possible. And when it comes to, for example, plant-based oils, we want to do extra virgin, cold-pressed oils and organic. So you’re getting the purest, the highest quality of those plant-based oils. Now usually don’t see that on the label. It’ll just say argon oil or seabuckthorn fruit oil, it usually doesn’t say that. You know, how they get the oils, how it’s extracted. Is it high heat, is it highly processed? You often times you don’t know that. But that is something that I’ve learned a lot about is that just like when you’re, when you’re consuming oils like olive oil or avocado oil and you’re putting those in salads and salad dressings and you’re using those in foods, you want those cold pressed extra virgin because you get those health benefits from it, right? And also times there’s a lot more of the flavor in those, well with skincare products, you want those in your oils as well because the nutrients that are available are greater when there’s less processing in the products and those individual ingredients. So as much as possible, we want to use, um, a great extraction, great processing abilities.
And then also another thing that a lot of people aren’t aware of is genetically modified ingredients. There’s a lot of awareness being brought to this when it comes to food and, and you’ll see labels where it says GMO-free or genetically modified free, you know, on the packaging for foods, but you don’t often see that in skin care products. And we’re really careful at the spa doctor and I’m sure there are other brands out there that are careful to stay away from the genetically modified ingredients. And there are so many of those out there, and when we’re talking about natural skin care products, you’re gonna see a more of those genetically modified because oftentimes they are cheaper, they’re less expensive and they’re easier to find often. So it takes a little bit more work to get the GMO free, the genetically modified free versions of ingredients from skin care products. But it is possible. So look for those companies that aren’t taking that extra step and being very mindful of how and where they’re getting their ingredients from. You can always contact the manufacturer and ask if they don’t have that information on their website. And I know that oftentimes we forget to share this kind of information with our customers, with our audience that how much we go, what we do, the links we go to to um, get the highest quality ingredients for the skincare products as well as the supplements that we make and sell. So it is key in and, and so you should expect that. I expect that of my company. I demand that of my company and I expect nothing less for you and I want you to demand that of other companies and start looking for these and asking questions.
So the next thing I want to share with you about, about the science about the true science behind skin care products. And I, it’s one of these big things that separate those, just all those natural skin care products out there from the natural skincare, these microorganisms that live on and protect your skin when they’re in the right balance. So bacteria, fungi and, and viruses and other microorganisms actually live on. And there are good ones that need to be there to protect your skin. And it’s about balance. And Ph is one of the things that supports that. So it’s really, it’s really crucial. So if you remember about Ph, you’ve got, you’ve got acidic, which is the low Ph, and then you have more base or alkaline, which is the Higher Ph. Seven is in the middle of the knitwear. It’s neutral with skin care products, what you want to aim for is 4.6 to 5 ph. That’s what the research has shown shows the most benefit for support, supporting the natural mild acidity of the skin. And so if you think about different ingredients and things that you put on your skin, water is, is neutral. It usually has a ph of around seven, sometimes more, a little bit more than that, but that’s even too high for your skin and it can actually disrupt that.
Many skin care products out there have a ph that is too high for the skin. So definitely when it starts to get to 5.5 Ph, anything over that is not gonna support that national amount of acidity. It’s so key because when you have that natural, that acid mantles in a healthy place and you have a healthy skin microbiome, it’s going to help keep your skin from breaking out, especially for those you who maybe have a tendency to acne or Rosacea, Eczema, races, any of these chronic skin issues or if you’re concerned about the aging of your skin, because it also plays a role in that. And of course, none of us are getting younger, we’re all getting older. So we want to do things that help support healthy, graceful aging. And so the Ph of the products is key with that. So let me share with you a tip to help you with that. If you’re not about the Ph of your products, what you can do is you can look on the website or maybe sometimes it’s on the container of the manufacturer of the skincare product and sometimes they actually have the ph of the products on The Spa Dr. We put the Ph up, the products on the website and our, our products are in that 4.6 to five Ph range. Every product except for oil, all oil. And if you have a product that is 100% oil, you can actually not check the Ph of the product. If you go back to chemistry class, you’ll probably remember why that is. But if it’s a completely oil based product, like our step four oil blend, we can’t test the Ph. The Ph is not available for that.
But all the other products you can test for yourself and it’s super simple. If you don’t, you can’t get that information from the manufacturer. All you need to do is get ph strips. You can get them from, you can order them off Amazon, you can get them at your local drug store and you could get the strips. Just make sure that they measure the acidity side of things and and you want to, you can put a little of the product in your hand and you can test it and you want it to be, ideally you want it to be 4.6 to 5. You definitely don’t want it to be over 5.5 and you’d also don’t want it to be super acidic too. And if you’re making DIY skincare products, this can also be really important to help you make sure that you’re getting that ideal Ph for the products that you’re using. So I get super simple, easy to do. And I think what you’ll find is particularly cleansers and body moisturizers, those are the ones that tend to be at when I’ve tested the various ones. Those are the ones that are particularly tend to be high. But really you’ll probably find many of the products that you’re using have a ph set too high for the skin. So really important tip. I know I spent some extra time on Ph. Really important for you to look at that because that is one of the things that differentiates those that work from those that typically don’t work. And I think that’s one of the reasons why our products work so well and our customers get such incredible results, especially after using the products for 30 days cause that’s a really great opportunity for your skin to kind of reset and rebalance cause it takes about 30 days for the skin cells to turn over.
Another thing to think about when it comes to skincare products is if you have allergies, you want to make sure that your products are free of allergens. And this, I know a lot of people now are going gluten free because a lot of people have sensitivities or allergies to gluten and certainly if you have Celiac this is important for you and so you want to make sure that the products don’t contain any gluten containing ingredients. There are some, some products out there containing oats and other grain based products that actually can have gluten in them. You can find oats that are gluten free, but you have to source those. And I know we have been looking at those ourselves cause oats can be a great ingredient for skin care products, but you want to make sure that they’re using the gluten free version of oats. So make sure you’re using that.
And then when it comes to other things, as far as the, the skin care products, important things that you might want to look for cruelty-free, that the products aren’t tested on animals. I know in some countries that’s part of typical practices or even mandatory. But um, you can find in the u s you can find a lot of products that are cruelty-free, including The Spa Dr. Products. You also want to think that you may not be aware of is the packaging of skincare products. I was shocked to learn what we were looking at packaging for The Spa Dr. skin care line how few available are 100% recyclable and certainly there are some options that are starting to come up, but what I went to a very large packaging company where they sell the containers, they sell the containers, the packaging that for personal care products for skincare products are a big one in la. And there they’re known for selling to a lot of big brands. And so went to their warehouse and I said to the rep, I said, show me the section of the warehouse that is 100% recyclable containers. And she took me to this one little shelf, one little section of the whole entire place and I couldn’t believe. And I looked around and I said, you mean to tell me that all of these packaging, and I recognized a lot of the containers from popular manufacturers, all of these are not completely recyclable. And she said, no. Well, you know, if you take out this part and there’s this little inside part, this part it’s recyclable. But the whole thing, you have to throw out this part that goes to the landfill. So, and I, you know, so at The Spa Dr., when I realized that I wanted to make sure that our products are 100% recyclable containers. So think about the packaging, think about the containers and hopefully we’ll have more options, um, maybe even biodegradable options and, and even more things coming. But at the very least, it should be recyclable so that we are not adding more harm to the environment.
