On today’s podcast, I’m doing something different… I’m bringing to you a couple of interviews I recently did at a 2019 Pre-Emmy’s event in Beverly Hills, CA.
It takes a lot of courage to be on camera like these TV actors, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to pick their brains for confidence-boosting tips.
The women I interviewed were asked a few simple questions:
What is your super power?
What is real beauty?
What is your favorite self-care practice?
I’m highlighting 2 of these women today from the pre-Emmy’s event at Eco-Luxe Lounge.
The first interview is with Carolyn Hennesy who is an American soap opera actress, author, and animal advocate. She is known for her role as Diane Miller on the daytime tv series General Hospital, for which she earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. Carolyn Hennesy also starred as Mrs. Valentine on the teen drama Dawson’s Creek in the 2000–2001 season, and she had supporting roles in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003).
She also is author of The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli, featuring characters from General Hospital, which reached #16 on the New York Times Best Seller list.

My next interview is with Brooke Anne Smith who is an American actress known for her lead series regular role on two seasons of Tyler Perry’s “Too Close To Home” where she played a drug addicted sexual assault survivor. She is also known for her recurring role on MTV’s hit show “Awkward.”
Brooke Anne Smith also had a lead series regular role in Oscar winner Renee Zellweger’s pilot “Cinnamon Girl” which was directed by critically acclaimed Gavin O’Connor.
And, she was a lead in Walt Disney’s “Max Keeble’s Big Move” and since then, has gone on to several television shows and feature films.

Transcript of Celebrity Confidence-Boosting Tips
Dr. Cates: Hi there. I’m Dr Trevor Cates. Welcome to The Spa Dr. Podcast. On today’s podcast, I’m telling something a little different. I’m bringing to you a couple interviews I recently did at a 2019 pre-Emmys event in Beverly Hills, California. It takes a lot of courage to be on camera like these TV actors do. So I thought they would be a great, this would be a great opportunity to interview them and pick their brains about confidence boosting tips. I mean certainly these actors need a lot of confidence to get in front of the camera and do what they do for TV. And I know that it can be challenging to always put on your game face and to pull that confidence and let it really radiate out. And so I know these actors have a lot of experience with this and so many of them have this inner radiance that shines through. So I pulled some of these women aside and asked them a few simple questions. So the questions I asked were one, what is your super power? Two, what is a real beauty? What does real beauty, what does it truly mean to be beautiful? I asked them that and then the third thing I asked them about was what is your favorite self care practice? And we got some really great, interesting feedback from people.
Dr. Cates: And before I dive in and share some of these interviews with you, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has left a review of the spa doctor podcast. Your reviews really help me understand who are the best guests to have on the podcast and what topics do you really want me to cover. So I really appreciate the feedback and so I want to share one of the reviews that was posted on iTunes and this is from her iTunes name is Personal Growth Junkie. I don’t know her real name, but thank you for this review. And she said, “I really love how Dr. Cates reminds us that clear skin truly comes from within. What we put into our bodies has so much impact on how we show up on the outside. She practices skin care as a functional practitioner by addressing the root cause of skin issues and educating her audience along the way.”
Dr. Cates: So I really do appreciate this review and I do want to bring you information to help you have that healthy skin on the outside because truly the skin is our magic mirror and it gives us great information about what’s going on inside. And I’m constantly trying to give you tools to help you with having that healthy, vibrant skin because it is a sign of optimal health and vitality. And with all of this comes confidence when we have healthier, more radiant looking skin oftentimes isn’t, it’s easier to step up more fully. And certainly if you have skin issues, it can be something that holds you back from showing up fully in life. And I remember this very much as a child when I was 11 years old, struggling with skin issues and being so embarrassed by all the rashes and interruptions I had on my skin, that it impacted the way that I showed up in the world. And so I, I w I’m so fortunate that my parents introduced me to a holistic approach at an early age. And, and that’s what led me to become a nature pathic physician. And then also to write my book, Clean Skin from Within, it focus on this message of skin and what messages it’s trying to tell you about your health. So I’ve figured out this along the way with myself, my own personally with patients over almost 20 years in practice and helping patients have more optimal health and that showing up on their skin. So now I’m bringing this to you in the podcast and information that we share at the spa dr com.
Dr. Cates: So going back to today, I’m highlighting to women today from the preemies event at the eco Lux lounge in Beverly Hills, California. The first interview is with Carolyn Hennessy. She is an American soap opera actress, author and animal advocate. She’s known for her role as Diane Miller on the daytime TV series, General Hospital for which she has earned a daytime Emmy award nomination. And Caroline Hennesy also starred as Mrs. Valentine on the team drama show, Dawson’s Creek. You remember that show is, she was, she was on that 2000 2001 season and she also had supporting roles in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde. And she’s author of the secret life of Damian Spinelli, featuring characters from General Hospital, which reached #16 on the New York Times Best Seller list. So in this interview with her, and this is a short interview because I was at this Emmy’s event and it just pulled her aside, asked her if I could interview her, so gracious of her to take a few moments to set with me and do this interview. Did it on my iPhone with the tripod. And so it was kind of fun to do these interviews. In this interview you’ll see her amazing confidence and I think her last tip on self care may surprise you. So check it out.
Carolyn Hennesy: Well, hello, my name is Carolyn Hennesy and I’m an animal whisper. I can talk to them and they talked back.
Dr. Cates: And that is one of your super powers.
Carolyn Hennesy: It’s one of my passions and my superpowers. Yes.
Dr. Cates: That’s so great. I love that.
Carolyn Hennesy: That and my other super power is I’m comfortable in my own skin, which is so unusual.
Dr. Cates: That is very unusual, and that’s what I want to talk to you about. Because you have this inner radiance, this inner glow that just, you could just tell is there something inside of you that really resonates? Just shows outside radiates out. So, what do you consider natural beauty? Real beauty. What is real beauty to you?
Carolyn Hennesy: Attitude.
Dr. Cates: And what does that mean?
Carolyn Hennesy: The attitude of understanding that no matter what your station slash place slash country of origin slash wherever you are, there’s only one of you. That’s all there will ever be. You’re an exceptionally powerful individual. Strengths and weaknesses. And your mission in life is to be happy. And that happiness will radiate out is it is to educate others on happiness. And it’s not kind of woo, woo, sort of airy, kind of airy fairy thing. It is literally concrete. You what you’re, that’s the attitude of happiness and gratitude. No matter what you’re going through because someone’s always got it worse and someone’s always got it better. So you just have to kind of embrace where you are and make your job, to make your job is to make everybody else’s job easier. That’s it.
Dr. Cates: So, the question then, is it possible for everyone to have this or do only some people have it?
Carolyn Hennesy: It’s possible. Only some people have it. It’s possible for everyone to have it. But some people are so mired in fear. And am I enough? Am I too much? Am I too unique? Am I boring? Am I, what haven’t I done? What don’t I have? You know, who haven’t I met? Well none of it matters. None of it. None of it matters. Everyone can have the attitude of happiness and playing well in the sandbox with others. Absolutely. In fact, it’s incumbent upon us as human beings to have, to obtain and get this attitude. And you can, some people are possibly naturally born with it, but you can always obtain it and you can always enhance it.
Dr. Cates: So what would you say are some of the most important self care parts of your routine? It could be mindfulness, it could be nutrition, skin care. What do you think are the most important parts of your self care routine that you wouldn’t want to miss and that you think would be other good for other people?
Carolyn Hennesy: Exercise. I fly trapeze so I don’t want to miss. I mean, and that’s just me. Y’all need to do what you want. You know, what, what brings you bliss. But exercise is critical. It’s just critical. So whatever it is, if it’s doing this every day, you know, but make sure you’re just moving yourself at some point. And this is your philosophy. It’s what goes in. You know, beauty is an inner job. So it comes from within. And listen, you can walk down the street wearing a burlap sack. If you’ve got an attitude of beauty about yourself and understanding your awesomeness to use a kid where the kids use, then, you know, the next day burlap sacks will be, it will be, you know, on the runway. So exercise, attitude. I’ve recently become a vegetarian and vegan wherever possible. And so I’ve stopped killing animals for my food or purchasing animals that have been killed for my food. So that’s a big mindfulness thing for me. Um, just here’s the thing, if you can be happy doesn’t mean you are, that doesn’t mean you should lack ambition doesn’t mean you should strive for great and wonderful things, but be happy and be happier the next day and next day. Be happier than that. That will just take care of a lot of stuff because, you know, stress is the big killer. Stress is the big, big killer. Stress and unhappiness. So yeah. So I tried to be happy. I exercise, I eat right and I love my animals, keep an animal, get an animal. That’ll add years. So there you go.
Dr. Cates: Thank you so much for your time today and helping us with the inspiration of feeling more confident and having that inner and outer radiance. Absolutely.
Dr. Cates: How about that confidence? Right. I love how comfortable she is and her own skin and how she’s willing to talk about that. How fantastic and inspirational is that. My next interview is with Brooke Anne Smith who is an American actress known for her lead series role in two seasons of Tyler Perry’s “Too Close To Home” where she played a drug addicted assault survivor. She’s also known for her recurring role on MTVs hit show Awkward. Brooke Anne Smith also has a lead role in Oscar winner, Renee Zellweger’s pilot Cinnamon Girl and she was a lead in Walt Disney’s Max Keeble’s Big Move. And since then she has gone on several television shows and feature films. So you may recognize her from some of those TV shows and she’s such a bright light different than the last interview. And you’ll see why when you watch this in this interview she shares how to have confidence and strength and where real beauty comes from and she has a very positive message for you at the end.
Brooke Anne Smith: Hi, my name is Brooke Ann Smith and I would say my super power is strength. Just being able to get through anything. Cause I think we’re stronger than we give ourselves credit for.
Dr. Cates: I love that resilience is so important and I think a lot of times we beat ourselves down and we, we lose that resilience. Have you ever felt like there are times in your life where you weren’t resilient?
Brooke Anne Smith: Absolutely. I mean I think it’s a struggle. You know, when you are going through hard things to think, Oh it’s never going to get better. But then it always does and you have to stick with it. And there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. So as long as you have resilience, I think you can pretty much get through all of it and it makes you stronger. And I think you come out the other side better than you were before and you grew and you learned something. So it’s always very reason. Awesome.
Dr. Cates: I love that. And so with w, what do you think is real beauty? What do you think when you think of real beauty, when someone’s truly beautiful, what does that look like?
Brooke Anne Smith: I think beauty comes from within. I think it’s always come from within and it shines the brightest light from within you. And I think also accepting yourself and um, being confident in who you are and what you look like and just loving every inch of you because it’s beautiful. And I think that that’s the most beautiful thing we can do is not try to find beauty outside of it, but realize that it’s always with us.
Dr. Cates: Yeah. That’s so beautiful. So tell me what are some of the self care parts of your routine that you think really help you with inner and outer radiance? And it could be mindfulness, it could be nutrition, skin care, whatever it is that you feel like is really important for self care.
Brooke Anne Smith: Absolutely. I’m a big proponent for self care because I think we don’t do it enough. We’re always giving to other people. We’re always giving to our careers, giving to life. So it’s really important to give back to yourself. So for me, I always make time to do that. I started every morning on an empty stomach with celery juice. I kind of was talking about that earlier. I think it’s just, it’s been such a great hydrator and just a great way to start my morning. I really love yoga. I find that just being in a pose that might be challenging and really learning how to breathe through that and come out strong on the other side is kind of a great, it correlates to how I like to live my life. So yoga has literally saved my life. I think. I love bubble bath and skincare is really important. I think just taking care of your, your skin makes you feel amazing cause we have, like we were talking about before, you absorb a lot through your skin. And I love washing my face and getting facials and putting on face masks and just kind of doing that sort of thing. A glass of wine maybe, hanging out with my dogs and so yeah, that’s kind of it.
Dr. Cates: I love it. So you kind of do it all, you really incorporate different aspects and bringing it all together. Is there any other last little tip that you have for women to help them feel that sense of self worth and confidence? The inner radiance?
Brooke Anne Smith: Yeah, I think the thing I would say to you is just like know that you’re beautiful and you’re worthy and you deserve love and don’t ever settle for anything less. Anything. Start by loving yourself the most. Love yourself. Like you love other people.
Dr. Cates: Perfect. Thank you so much.
Dr. Cates: I love how she talks about resilience. I can only imagine how resilient it takes to be an actor. A little something you may not know is that my sister Challen Cates is an actor and she was Mrs. Knight on the TV show Big Time Rush on Nickelodeon. If you have teenage children, you may have even, they may have watched the show when it was on. It’s no longer on, but when it was on for many seasons and, or maybe you saw it yourself and you know, it’s interesting to watch her, I know when we’re together places, people will come up to her and say, Oh, it’s mrs Knight. And they recognize her from TV. But I also know that it’s been challenging for her, but watched her over the years at times. It’s not always easy as an actor. It certainly takes a lot of resilience and I have so much respect for her and all the actors that continue to show up and do this work.
Dr. Cates: So today I wanted to highlight these two women that I’ve shared these interviews with you today, Carolyn Hennesy and Brooke Anne Smith. Because even though their personalities and ages are quite different, they both exude this amazing inner radiance and their confidence really shines through them. You could see that and it, it shows up on, on camera. It shows up through these interviews and the videos. So I hope their tips inspired you. And there are many other people that I talk to at the event and that they shared some of their natural beauty tips. And at the end of the day, one of The Spa Dr. Estheticians, Alex and I did a quick wrap up video. There were so many TV stars that we talked to at the EcoLux lounge with this preemies event at Beverly Hilton and we enjoyed sharing the spa dr products with all the people and getting their feedback. So I wanted to share this little video with that. Alex and I did at the end talking about the feedback that we got from some of these people.
Dr. Cates: Oh my gosh, it’s been a long day Alex. So we’ve been at this Emmy’s event, the EcoLux lounge and of summer and we’ve had so many different celebrities come through. But it’s been great. Right?
Alex: It’s been really fun meeting everyone and helping educate them about skincare from the inside out.
Dr. Cates: And you were doing a little hand massages. And so what was people, what were people’s feedback from those.
Alex: People were really surprised with the oil based cleanser. How moist and supple their skin looked just after a short hand massage using all the product samples on the back of their hand. They were able to see the difference of how using this might help their face in the long run.
Dr. Cates: That’s great. Yeah. And it was funny and people would walk away and say, Oh I want my other hand done because I have only one soft hand. But you did that on purpose?
Alex: I did that on purpose. But there were also a few people who are like, well, my other hand needs some TLC too. So I’m like, okay. Yeah, you’re right. Just don’t tell anyone. So there are a couple of people I did both hands.
Dr. Cates: Okay, well it was fun and it was fun catching up with some celebrities and seeing people here from TV and getting some, also some natural beauty tips from people and some inner beauty radiance confidence boosting tips.
