Compounding Pharmacies with Karin Carestia

Compounding pharmacist Karin Carestia is my guest today on The Spa Dr show and is here to discuss compounding pharmacies and bio-identical hormones. Karin received her degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and completed comprehensive programs with PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America). She has been a pharmacist for more than 20 years and worked for University Pharmacy, Smiths, and RiteAid until opening her own compounding pharmacy, Alpine Apothecary, in 2010.

On today’s show, Karin shares with us what makes a compounding pharmacy different from a regular pharmacy, why you might need a compounding pharmacy, and how to find one near you. She also covers specific questions to ask a compounding pharmacy to ensure safety and that you’re getting the best quality and accurate potency. Compounding pharmacies are more specialized options for healthcare. Prescriptions are created specifically for the patient at compounding pharmacies as a way to treat an acute or chronic illness in a more personalized way. Compounding pharmacies are a great option for anyone looking for specified treatments or for those who want to feel like their prescriptions are made specifically for their needs.

Karin and I also discuss bio-identical hormones—what they are, how they’re made, and how compounding the various hormones works. I know there are a lot of questions about compounding and bio-identical hormones, and I really think this will answer those questions!
