Addressing Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis with Dr. Izabella Wentz

Dr. Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP is a pharmacist who has dedicated her career to addressing the root causes of autoimmune thyroid diseases. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in 2009 she made this her focus. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy at the age of 23.

After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Dr. Wentz was surprised at the lack of knowledge about lifestyle interventions for Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune conditions. She decided to take on lifestyle interventions as a personal mission in an effort to help herself and others with Hashimoto’s. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is responsible for controlling our metabolisms. An attack on the gland due to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis can cause issues like hypothyroidism in adults. Dr. Wentz has summarized three years of research and two years of testing in her book, the best-selling patient guide Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause and she is the co-producer of the Hashimoto’s Institute.

On Today’s show we talk about common signs and symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis such as fatigue, weight and skin problems. You might be surprised to hear how common this unusual sounding health condition is. On the show, Izabella shares her story and we discuss causes of Hashimoto’s and treatment options. Treating the disease may require a visit to your doctor for diagnosis, so if you think you have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis a simple check up or blood test can determine if you do. Dr. Wentz specializes in promoting awareness of the disease. Because it’s much more common than it sounds, it often goes un-diagnosed in many people.
