As we get ready to celebrate Mother’s Day, many of us are planning the perfect gift or a special day to say thank you. We thank mothers and other women in our lives for their guidance, wisdom, and sacrifices along the way and this is well-deserved. My own mother, aunts, and sisters have inspired me to follow my dreams, and I am so grateful to them for that.
Although there are many gifts that we inherit from the women around us, not everything is easy. Women can also be hard on each other and themselves, questioning their beauty and self-worth.
I can relate to this too. When I was a child, I compared myself to the other women in my family and often felt like an ugly duckling. I spent hours alone in my room or in nature and made school my priority. At some point, I decided I wasn’t beautiful and instead aimed to be smart.
I know many people can relate to feeling unattractive or unworthy. Over the years, I’ve heard from thousands of women in my clinics and programs and from hundreds of women experts I have interviewed for my podcast and docuseries – and it’s clear that so many of us have had similar struggles.
The personal stories these women have shared with me revealed that regardless of age, income, physical characteristics, or talent, every woman has questioned her beauty at some point. You probably know women who struggle with body image and self-worth. When we think of it this way, it might be surprising to consider our own mothers have felt the same way or even feel that way right now.
It wasn’t until my 40’s that I really understood beauty in a new light. Being beautiful is not about whether or not we inherited our mother’s emerald green eyes or thick hair. It goes far beyond physical appearance. Being beautiful is not about being perfect. It’s about restoring balance and harmonizing our health and mindset, and our hormones play a big role in this.
Mother’s Intuition and Gut Instincts
A “gut instinct” can be described as a deep knowing or immediate understanding. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain – mothers know this all too well. At the same time, there’s a reason we call it a “gut instinct.”
This phenomenon is aptly named, and it starts before birth. Your gut is home to the enteric nervous system. This gut-brain connection can make our emotional experiences register physically when neurons send signals to the brain. This is all part of your gut microbiome. The microbiome refers to the balance of microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi in various areas of the body. We need a healthy gut microbiome for optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients from our food.
The gut microbiome affects several parts of your health including the harmony of your hormones, your mental health, your biological age, and your skin. When you were in your mother’s womb, your gut microbiota started developing and evolving. Birth, nursing, diet, pet exposure, hygiene, and anything else you can think of in the environment have all had an impact on your gut microbiome.
What happens in a baby’s development is complex – and the future health of a baby is happening right from conception. So if you got a running start in the good gut health department, you can thank your mom for that!
Hormones, Health and Harmony Is Coming Soon
Unfortunately, some of the inheritances from our mothers and other females in our family tree are a little more challenging. For example, PCOS and endometriosis can be genetic. Researchers also believe early menopause may have some genetic factors.
However, when we experience unique health struggles, we can use them to feel empowered and take control of our health. The best news is we can influence our genes and actually change our genetic expression – especially when we learn how to balance our hormones.
In my 9-part docuseries, Hormones, Health and Harmony, I interviewed over 50 experts on the subject of women’s health and hormones.
Invite your mother, girlfriends, aunts – any mother figure in your life – to watch with you! In each episode, we’re busing common myths to reveal surprising truths about achieving hormonal balance and correcting imbalances. It starts on May 10, and I can’t wait for you to see it!
Embrace Your Beauty
When you think about your mother, do you think she is beautiful? I’m guessing you do. Let her know that this Mother’s Day (and every day!). And don’t forget that you also have a unique radiance and beauty that you may not see. If you’re not feeling your best right now, it’s okay but take time for a fresh look at yourself. The gifts you inherited from your mother are beyond physical – they’re gifts of kindness, strength, intelligence, grace, and so much more. When you feel healthy and at your best, you can embrace, acknowledge, and embody these gifts even more.
